Seniors (36 in all) competed against one another today during periods 2-4 in a competitive poetry slam Mrs. Gallagher called “truly emotional and inspirational.” Mrs. Hartnett, who brought her class to watch, said today was “honestly the highlight of the year” and commended Mrs. Powe and Mrs. Gallagher for creating an event through which “many students felt seen, heard, and valued.”

Five judges awarded scores of 1-10 for each of the performers. After the high and low scores were dropped, here are the winners:
First Place: Justine Golata with her poem “I Want to Talk About”
Second Place: Isabelle Myers with her poem “Every Second Counts”
Tied for Third Place: Katie Svehla with her poem “Snakes and Other Slithering Creatures” and Abbey Connolly with her poem “Through My Eyes”

Congratulations to all the poets who worked through the nervous jitters to share their voices with a wider audience. It’s not too late to submit work to this year’s literary magazine. Send your creative work to the editors at [email protected].
