German Club Celebrates Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest, one of the world’s largest celebrations centered in Munich, Germany, has come to Crystal Lake.

Hosted by the Prairie Ridge German Club, German students from all over the district flocked to Veterans Acres on September 25 to have bratwurst, speak some German, and compete in a variety of games to win prizes. Students from Central, South, Cary Grove, and PR competed to win gummy bears in rigorous competition, which included the pretzel toss, a favorite among students, involved students catching pretzels in buckets on their heads.

According to a student from South, “the pretzel toss was really fun, but really hard.”

Students also participated in the bandana run, another favorite, among other competitions.

The food was also a big hit, and PR’s own Marley Henderson commented, “I liked the bread”, and Morgan Pelky of Cary Grove added, “the cake, chocolate, and cookies were the best,”referencing the large spread of German chocolate cake, wide variety of cookies, and even cookies that could be frosted dawned the desert table.

Overall, Oktoberfest was a success in its bringing together of kids from all over District 155 to have some fun and appreciate German culture.
