When I performed in my first marching band competition. I was fortunate to have such a supportive flute section with leaders who were very encouraging. I was confident that our section would absolutely nail it on the field, with our flutes angled at exactly 91 degrees, our chins held up high and our posture tall and proud. It was the greatest feeling stepping onto the huge field with my band and witnessing the crowd of people in the stands. I could not help but feel nervous, even though I knew the music and the drill like the back of my hand. The moment we played our first note, I felt chills all over me. The music filled my heart with excitement and joy and I just could not have felt more alive in that moment. This was my place and these were my people. Hearing the crowd roar after our performance only proved that further. It was one of the most rewarding experiences showcasing all of our hard work and feeling that sense of accomplishment. – Francesca Pollock

Mr. Terhaar has dress up days where we each do research on a certain historical figure and then we present what we learned by dressing up and acting as that historical figure. I initially found these to be a bit embarrassing as I didn’t feel comfortable with dressing up and giving a speech. But, by the end of the year these were some of the best days of class and I really enjoyed the experience, especially when I tried to do a Bostonian accent and it came out as a Southern accent. – Nathan Jankowski

The Math Team state bus. Every year (well, except for when state was cancelled), it’s a PR tradition to watch Mean Girls on the way to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
