The spring sport season is up and running! Many sports have started such as soccer, baseball, tennis, track and field and softball. The softball teams are looking good this season, with three full rosters, Freshman, JV and Varsity. I’ve spoken to some of the players from all three teams to hear their thoughts about the season.

I asked some pretty crazy questions to the players like “If you coach was an animal, what animal would they be?” Sydney White, a freshman who plays for the JV team responded that her coach, Dave Krizanovic, would be a fox “because he’s a fierce competitor but he’s quiet and doesn’t scream at us when we’re on the field.”

Haley Barnes, a freshman pitcher for the varsity team, thinks her coach, Mike Buck, would be a turtle. Coach Buck responded to that, saying “Maybe she thinks I’m a turtle because I’m slow, short and have a hard exterior.”

Elaine Poole, who plays first base  for the freshman team, says “One of the best things about softball isn’t just the sport itself, it’s about meeting new girls and making new friends.” That’s true for many sports because life isn’t all about winning, it’s also about making human connections and learning from experiences.

In every sport there are certain moments that nobody forgets and some of the players told me about the moment that stands out to them from the season thus far.

Elaine told me that the game that stood out to her was “our game against Grayslake North when we lost by one due to a lousy call, but we really came together as a team. It helped me learn that together we can be amazing and can conquer anything.”

Playing with Elaine on the freshman team at catcher and shortstop is Madi Goode. Their coach, Jim Summaria, must have taught them about himself well, because when asked what their coach would bring with him on a desert, they both answered with his camera and his phone, which is apparently referred to as a ‘dino’ phone.

Sydney believes that her coach, Coach Krizanovic, would bring a “a ball, a bat and a glove because he is very committed to what he does.” It is important for a coach to be dedicated to their team because it wouldn’t be a team without a coach!

Spring is flying by, and so are the sport seasons! The girls are about a ⅔ of the way through their games, and it will be bittersweet when the season eventually comes to a close.
