The Pros and Cons of SmartMusic

The band has recently upped their technological status through the use of a new program called SmartMusic designed to help individual students progress in their musical capabilities.
Through this program, Mr. Blakewell can assign sections of a piece for students to practice at home while hooked up to a microphone. The students then send their recording to Mr. Blakewell where he may then assess the segment. The program’s main aim is to encourage band kids to practice more at home, and therefore bring together the ensemble’s sound. It is too soon to see whether or not the program has benefitted Prairie Ridge band students, but Mr. Blakewell hopes improvements will be evident in the next couple of weeks.

Although the program offers many benefits, some are unhappy that they have “homework” in band class. The weekly assignments mean taking one day out of the week to take instruments home and bring them back the next day. To some, this may seem like a hassle; others may save it for the weekend. Students are graded on the assignment, so if it’s not completed it is treated like any other piece of homework. In previous years, students had to earn their participation points only in band class–not anymore!

Whatever the student’s opinion, it will take some getting used to. The technology of the program is impressive, allowing students to record exercises at home for the director to hear, make comments and suggestions. Some of the best school bands and orchestras use it; now it’s our turn to try.
