Oscar Predictions
The Nuños twins offer insights on the year’s biggest night for films
It is time to roll out our predictions for who will take home the gold this Sunday night!
Best Picture – 12 Years A Slave
If there is any category where this film is a surefire win, it is this category. It meets all of the prerequisites of a Best Picture winner and it has been winning all of the awards that are usually a good predictor to this one. However, it tied with Gravity at the Producer’s Guild Awards for Best Picture. While adding some mystery to the air, I still believe it will win by a landslide.
Best Director – Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
There should be little to no bickering here. Cuaron delivered one of the most interesting and enveloping masterpieces of cinema last year. To pull off a film like Gravity, it took a master director to do so. That alone should be the reasoning behind this obvious win.
Best Actor – Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club
Not saying that McConaughey did not give a rousing performance, but his career seems to be entering a 20-year high right now. Meanwhile, Chiwetel is in the same position Jean Dujardin was in back in 2011. If it were up to us, Chiwetel should take home the gold during the one chance he’ll probably have to do so. Sorry, Leo, looks like you’ll have to wait until next time.
Best Actress – Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
There is a reason she is loved by critics and, more importantly, Academy voters.
Best Supporting Actor – Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
It take guts to become a transvestite for a movie. However, it takes even bigger guts to completely envelop yourself in the role. This is exactly what Jared Leto did, and he should be commended for it.
Best Supporting Actress – Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years A Slave
Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in American Hustle is just a tad overdone. Still, it was a rousing performance. However, considering she won last year for Silver Linings Playbook and considering the fact that Lupita got an extra boost in publicity by winning a Screen Actors Guild Award, Nupita will likely take this category. And she deserves it.
Best Adapted Screenplay – John Ridley, 12 Years A Slave
Even though the other nominees are in themselves impressive, 12 Years stands out mostly because it has everything that an Oscar-winning script is supposed to have and then some.
Best Original Screenplay – Spike Jonze, Her
One of the reasons people liked American Hustle so much was because the dialogue in that film was as smooth as velvet. However, Spike Jonze took on a far more difficult task. He made a screenplay revolving around a man’s relationship with his computer! The fact that he not only did that but did it so well should be reason enough to give him the win.
For the most part, it looks like the Oscars will be doing justice where needed. Still, the Oscars have been known to surprise! So tune in this Sunday to see what happens!
