Three blind mice, a prisoner, a greek goddess, a cheetah, and some minions will be out on Halloween night in Crystal Lake, say PR students who responded to Wolf Prints Media survey. This year’s trick-or-treating hours in Crystal Lake and Cary are 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM.
Whether or not to dress up and go trick-or-treating can be controversial in high school. This year at PR, dressing up is more popular than trick-or-treating. When asked if they are dressing up this year outside of school, 84% of the 33 students who voted said they are! However, only 39% of the 33 said they are actually trick-or-treating.
This may be because in at least one town in Illinois, the age limit of legal trick-or-treating is 12 years old, NBC Chicago reports. While there is no national age limit, states provide their own number that they deem appropriate. However, that doesn’t stop the fun of hanging out with friends, dressing up and getting a couple sweet treats.
Some parents and teenagers don’t go trick-or-treating, but just dress up for their younger family members. Andrew Cioper, a current junior, said he will not be trick-or-treating, and if he did he stated “I’d just chaperone my sister for the later part of the evening.”
Senior Bree Sittner also said she will not be trick-or-treating this year, but that’s because she will be out of town. Bree exclaimed “I am dressing up as a cop for one of my costumes!” Cops and robbers have been a fan favorite since elementary school, but only get more creative as time goes on.
Creativity was on full display at this year’s Wolfpack marching band Halloween party. Several color guard members made parts of their costume to dress up as characters from Strawberry Shortcake.
Years ago when more people created their costumes with materials from home, they created costumes with much darker themes. “Halloween costumes for the first half of the 20th century were terrifying,” CNN reported in 2020. Today’s costumes aren’t really scary anymore, but instead fun or cute in something a person wouldn’t normally wear.
Sophomore Faye Adkins was one of those who voted ‘YES’ to the poll about dressing up. “I am dressing up as Serena and Blair from Gossip Girls with my friend Makayla.” But Makayla Fox, also 10th grade, mentioned she and Faye aren’t trick-or-treating “because [she is] decorating for Christmas.”
Before Hallmark takes over our screens, horror movies are still in full swing. Senior Miles Ray doesn’t plan to go out but says “I’m going to just stay home and watch horror movies.”
Some of Google’s top horror movies include Smile 2 and The Conjuring. The Numbers: Business Report says the top two grossing films are It, 2017, with over $700,000,000 and Jaws, 1975, with over $400,000,000 in all-time box office earnings worldwide.
Horror movies aren’t just the jump scare kind, but also psychological horror. Andrew Cioper’s favorite horror in this category is American Psycho, a 2000’s Horror/Comedy.
Dressing up, getting free candy and exercise, watching horrifyingly great movies, and most importantly, the memories made along the way make this holiday not just for little ones. Prairie Ridge is excited for the fun!
