Last Thursday, April 4, the special education students from District 47 elementary schools traveled to PR for a day of fun!
39 Seniors volunteered their day to set up equipment and walk their “buddie” through all the games. From basketball to scooter trains, this day is the best of the year for many.
When asked why he chose to participate, senior Rielan Mahmood stated “I just enjoy supporting the young community, I have a younger brother so I like playing games, messing around, and having fun.”
For about 15 years, Prairie Ridge High School has been running this event in conjunction with the D47 programs. Teachers and supervisors gather together in the main gym to provide the students with everything they could ever wish for.
With a wide range of functionality amongst the buddies, PR students acquired patience but also comedic personality traits as they worked through a wide range of activities including soccer, bags, coloring, and more!
This however is no problem as senior Predrag only describes it as a chance to “Make a change and have fun.”
PR students started the day by greeting the buddies as they came off their school buses in the loading dock. Each kid was assigned two seniors to spend the day with.
Together, the trio played games all around the gym.
“This is my first time… I hope to make kids happy” Angel Rodriguez said when asked if he was ready for the chaotic day of entertaining these young children.
There was no doubt these kids didn’t love it.
After spending about 4 hours together, every single child left with a huge smile on their face and some even begged their teachers to stay just a little longer.
Thanks to the hard work of Mrs. Buck and the Senior Project team here at PR, events like these are able to run smoothly and put a smile on every young child’s face. It’s events like these that make PR truly a special place to be!
