Musical Passing Periods?
This article is part of the Ask the Principal series featuring real questions from PR students.
Dr. Koch, could you play music in the hallways during passing periods?
I am sure we could, I think South does it, every period…maybe I have that wrong. If we do it during Homecoming, obviously we have the capability to do it. But I would want to know from all students, is that what we want? I would want to know from my teachers, are we comfortable? Then we would need, obviously, some filters to make sure it is school appropriate. If a request came in for a song I didn’t know, I can’t just play it.
Would it be too much of a hassle to play?
No, I don’t think so. But to be honest, I don’t know what goes into playing it during Homecoming week. I think literally a student council member holds their little device next to our PA system. I honestly don’t know what goes into it. But South I’m pretty sure does it. That is something we can investigate. I am not against it. If people thought that would be a way to make school more enjoyable, why would I get in the way of that? Sounds good.

The idea of playing music during passing periods is a good idea in my opinion. If Dr.Koch, the principle, supports it that put a lot of steam behind the possibility of doing it- if even if he says it has to be clean- and could possibly push it to actually happining. Even though this idea seems new and different , if you look around at other peoepl in the hallways they are alreday listing to music during the passing period using headphones and earbuds. but the clean rule that i mentoned erlier might tear away support from such a movment. People who do not have headphones would lickely enjoy it. In the end if there is enough support it would be allowed.

I think that playing music during passing periods is a great idea; however, the songs need to be appropriate. Dr. Koch, the principal of Prairie Ridge High School, says the students might want to play music that could be inappropriate. I think if the students wanted to play music during passing periods, then they will put in music that is allowed. Dr. Koch has no problem with this idea, so I do not know why we cannot do it every period. Students should push to get this idea to come to the school. It would be a stress-reliever to students who may be having a bad day. I feel that this could be very beneficial to the school.

I would agree with what Trey wrote about his opinion. The answer about musical passing periods by Dr.Koch was a reasonable anwser because I would agree about that we would need the appropriate music because maybe it might offend some people about there cultural. Another thing is that if we play music in the passing periods it would help relive stress off of other people. A question would have for this is would it be able to be any kind of music?

I agree with Tray; music will stimulate the minds of many and he is right about the down side to the idea. Maybe the office could look through the song? Other students might think it’s boring to not have inappropriate language, but the school should be a safe place with the stimulation of learning. Learning is the most important.
