The Mortal Instruments Returns … Again
The bestselling YA fantasy series will be a TV show
The Mortal Instruments, a popular series by Cassandra Clare is full of dilemma, action, love and mystery. The book was a hit because it kept you on your toes. There were so many plot twists and unexpected turns that you didn’t want to put it down. Mrs. Bland, PR Librarian, said, “The whole series was super popular in the library just a few years ago. In fact, it was so popular that it won the Abe Award in 2010.” With a hit series like this, how could the movie makers go wrong?
The book was shaped into a movie for the world to see in 2013, but it was a flop! The entire plot was all twisted and didn’t get to the same end point as the book. Some of the cast was perfect for their role, while others weren’t. Lily Collins was an amazing Clary, while Jamie Campbell Bower, wasn’t the best Jace due to looks and attitude.
The movie didn’t have the ‘dreamcast’ and there were a few ‘plot-problems.’ Lots of important details were changed that would affect the later novels. The movie makers hinted that there was actually two or three cups while, as the readers know, there is only one. They also hinted at Simon being a werewolf, but in reality, we don’t find that out until City of Ashes. The way they portrayed the series was off as well. Megan Anderson said, “I thought the overall color palette was too dark and mysterious. I think that they tried too hard to make it intense, while it was, there were also parts that were lighthearted in the book that they cut out of the movie.” I would have to agree because the first book was very simple and playful, but they didn’t show that in the movie.
We can agree now that the movie wasn’t perfect and has some major flaws. But the fans were still hopeful about the next movie, City of Ashes. Now, the big news is here. Are they continuing the series as movies? Nope. They are making the bestselling series a television show.
The series is going to be made into a TV show after the movie was a flop. The show will start completely over with the first book and (hopefully) move all the way to the last. Episodes will run one hour. Ed Decter will be producing it. As for the cast? As of the right now, it is undecided if the movie cast will return. According to Mail Online, Lily Collins (Clary Fray) was open to the idea. She said “it’s like going back to summer camp with your best friends.” She went on the state that she has a good understanding of her role and would be open to coming back.
According to Variety, Martin Moszkowicz said that they are currently analyzing what went wrong in the movie and trying to budget and fix it for the TV show. Hopefully this means it’s more like the book…?
So now, books fans, what can we hope for in the TV series? Megan Anderson perfectly summed up what I’m hoping for, “… more quotes directly from the book and stick to the original writing done by Cassandra Clare instead of changing it to make it appeal to people who haven’t read the books.” We want our beloved series to be showed for what it truly is!!
If you are haven’t read the book yet, but are looking to watch the TV show, WAIT! Treat yourself and read the book. Then watch the show and enjoy. I promise you, you’ll love it so much more.
For all the fans out there, there is hope! Our favorite books still have hope of making the big screen. To find more out about Cassandra Clare and her books, visit her Shadowhunter page and experience the world for yourself!
