Mrs. Koch and Mrs. Brechbiel’s wacky dance to “Jessie’s Girl,” Ms. Orsi and Mr. Seiler’s outstanding rapping skills, and Mr. Dusenske’s touching performance of “Your Song” were only a few among the many performances that made Karaoke for a Cure a night to remember on Thursday, April 4, 2012.
Karaoke for a Cure is an annual fundraiser to raise money for ovarian cancer research at Northwestern Women’s Apprentice Hospital. It first began five years ago by PR graduate Jacob Stefan, who had lost his aunt to ovarian cancer at that time and organized the fundraiser as a tribute to her. Ever since then, Karaoke for a Cure has been a fun event, in which students can raise money towards cancer research and watch their teachers like never before.
This year, Karaoke for a Cure was organized by Luke Feetterer, Steven Dicklich, and Joshua Reichert for their National Honors Society New Member Projects. Luke, who is Jacob Stefan’s cousin, explained how Karaoke is extremely important to him since he lost his mother five years ago and his aunt this past year.
“Doing Karaoke for a Cure annually is very important and hits close to home for everybody,” Mrs. Brechbiel, one of the sponsors of NHS, said. “No one needs to look far to find someone who has cancer or [who] has passed because of the horrible disease.”
This year, Karaoke raised $2000 towards cancer research. “I am overwhelmed with the generosity of our students and parents,” Mrs. Koch, the other sponsor of NHS. reflected.
Though a fundraiser towards a serious cause, both students and teachers have a blast at Karaoke every year without fail.
“It’s a fun, memorable way to connect with the faculty and students,” explained Mr. Kennett. “Some of my fondest memories come from this event.”
