Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M, Manti Te’o of Notre Dame, and Collin Klein of Kansas State were all part of a sacred ceremony for all college football players called the Heisman Trophy Presentation. Only a select few players get invited to this ceremony, previously won by NFL standouts Robert Griffin III and Cam Newton. They both dominated not only the NCAA, but now are dominating in the NFL.
While Manti Te’o is likely moving on to the NFL with possibly Klein as well, Manziel is only a freshman, so he couldn’t move on, but still he became a favorite for this prestigious award, with Te’o in second and Klein third.
And that is exactly how the order went, with Maziel becoming the first freshman in Heisman History to win. When accepting the award, he claimed that the trophy wasn’t for him, but it was for “the 12 man, to Texas A&M, Kerrville, Texas, and Aggies everywhere. This Heisman Trophy is for you! Gig ‘Em!”
He made Heisman history, being enshrined within the greats of the sport. Coach Sumlin talked about the history of the Heisman, saying, “Now we have two (winners)… it really legitimizes what we are right now as a program.” But this program and this player wasn’t even in the running until he got some help from the other candidates.
Klein was the favorite right until his team started to crumble and lose and Klein began to underachieve. Te’o then became the leader of the pack, while he was having a record breaking season with the undefeated Notre Dame. At this time, Johnny “Football” wasn’t even in the race, until he went out and defeated the #1 team in the league, Alabama.
Then everyone knew this kid.
He was the slayer of Alabama, who was supposed to win it all for the second year in a row. While Alabama still has a chance to win and beat Notre Dame for the championship, they are no longer undefeated.
Texas A&M will play in the Cotton Bowl, and many people are asking whether Manziel can carry the burden that is the Heisman. He seems geared up and really just happy to be recognized, but really wants more than that.
With all this pressure mounting on his back, Johnny “Heisman” now can prove to everyone that he deserved to win this prestigious award.
