On Saturday, September 29th, the Prairie Ridge National Honor Society members left their mark on the community by volunteering at the 20th Annual Johnny Appleseed Festival in downtown Crystal Lake.
At the Johnny Appleseed Festival, many families come to enjoy a day filled with fun activities, such as games, contests, and a variety of shows. Here, volunteers were needed to set up, collect tickets, run games, and clean up litter.
“ I think that the Johnny Appleseed really shows what volunteering is all about,” explained junior Abby Mahnke, who helped run the Pumpkin Bowling Station. “It’s about making a difference in the community and making people happy.”
Junior Nicole Flores, also at the Pumpkin Bowling Station, added how she appreciated the opportunity for volunteering at the festival. “I think we really [got] to join the community,” she said. “We gather[ed] everyone together and ha[d] a fun time!”
The Prairie Ridge NHS members enjoyed their experience at the festival. “It’s fun to get out there and help out,” said junior Hannah Mrazko, who collected tickets for the pony ride.
“I like helping the kids and seeing their faces when they get really excited,” added Nicole.
NHS students cannot wait to contribute at the festival next year once more. “ It makes me feel good to put a smile on everyone’s faces,” Abby explained.
