Last year, smiles were on everyone’s face. We had won state in football for the first time in school history. An energetic squad proved the whole community wrong, and they led us to a title in Champaign, Illinois. So, where did that go?
The Homecoming football game is a game that you are supposed to win. Not only win, but put on a show. Well, a show was put on. By the other team.
A slow start by both teams sent us on a ride through boringville. Not much good was happening to either team until the fourth quarter, when a happy Jacobs team exploded, toppling the Wolves. The final score was 34-16. We got trampled.
A fumble and interception-riddled contest by PR just testifies that this is not the same team as last year. Don’t get me wrong, I know that every player is trying their best. But sometimes it just isn’t enough and that is how life goes.
A few lost seniors, one too many injuries and a quarterback problem reflects a 2-5 record that not many people would be proud of. I’m not proud, and neither are the players, who are on a hunt to find the winning formula.
This game didn’t look too good from the beginning. The cheerleaders weren’t peppy, the fans weren’t excited, and I was more focused on the MLB Wild Card games than the game at hand. Why did we lose hope?
The Golden Eagles squad looked more hyped than PR in pregame, where most of the emotion and energy starts. It carried onto the field, where there were some great plays, but no real spark. The Wolves stayed in it for a while, but then they just… lost.
Nothing defined the contest like after the game. The PR team gathered by the superfan section and sang our beloved school song. I couldn’t even make out the words, and the tempo was so low you could hear the depression in their poorly-pitched voices. But most of all, there were tears in their eyes.
At that point, they knew that they lost the game, the season, and their fans.
