During the week of November 14 – 18, Prairie Ridge students took part in various activities to recognize the four languages that are offered at PR. Many could be seen sporting the yellow t-shirt designed by PR art students.
Monday began the sale of the Brazilian wish bracelets in the commons, sold for a dollar each to support a school in El Salvador. The Portuguese writing on the bracelets literally translates to “the end will be good,” meaning that the wearer’s wishes will come true. The idea is that if three knots are tied (each stands for a wish), wishes will come true when they fall out. Marina Jacobs, a student selling the bracelets, was glad that “they raised quite a bit of money for the school in El Salvador.”
This year Spanish club also sponsored a trip to La Tasca, an authentic Spanish restaurant in Arlington Heights. Jack Disselhorst was excited, and was amazed how “this year so many students were interested that some had to be turned away.” Fortunately, there will surely be another trip to the Tapas restaurant in the spring.
Sophomore Lili Schiller, a trilingual scholar, also went to La Tasca and mentioned that “German club had a movie night on Wednesday.”
Christina Kappil, President of Chinese club, said that they had a game day in which they “played Chinese board games, had Chinese snacks, and watched Mulan.”
This week was a multicultural experience for Prairie Ridge, and each year it is a fun way for students to get involved and celebrate the diversity of the school and the world.
