Organized by Spanish National Honor Society, Prairie Ridge High School’s first ever Epic Race took place Wednesday, September 21, beginning at 5:45 pm.
The Epic Race, meant to mimic the set-up of a giant scavenger hunt, consisted of various activities and stations set up around the school. Each team’s goal was to figure out the clues, find the stations, complete twelve of the fourteen activities on the list and be the first team to finish.
Twenty teams of three or four people took part in the event, and participants included freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, as well as Mr. Pellikan and his kids and Seňora Tiria.
Before the racers received their cards and clues, they first had to take a picture of the Salvador Dali’s Persistence of Memory. Then, the fun began as students sprinted down hallways and even travelled outside the school, as they tried to understand the clues and find the location of a station.
During the race, teams completed activities, such as learning the school song and accompanying dance, catching a sombrero on their head, pinning a tail on the burro, imitating a Picasso painting, snacking on some hot peppers, scoring a goal, singing along to Shakira, playing some games of Matamoscas, testing their frisbee golf skills, and showing off their beatboxing talents.
As participant Carly Stovall worked to match flags, countries, and capitals, she exclaimed, “I’m loving this. It’s s much fun, but so exhausting.”
At about 7:00pm, the first team consisting of seniors Alexandra Saldan, Cheska, Zoleta, and Kurtis Stefan crossed the finish line. They each received a gift certificate in the amount of twenty dollars to Las Cumbres.
The second place team finished shortly after, receiving tubes of delicious mini M&Ms.
As the event came to a close, many of the participants expressed their wishes to participate once again next year. SNHS member, Morgan Marinelli enjoyed working her station, but after observing the high energy race, she ” wish[es] [she] could have taken part in the excitement.”
With twenty teams participating, the event raised $240. These proceeds will go towards the work of Kelly Harvey in El Salvador, who has asked PR’s Spanish National Honor Society to help her by funding scholarships for the kids to attend school and by providing the money to purchase computers and sports equipment for the children of El Salvador.
As Seňor Taege said, “It was truly EPIC” since in the end, this memorable event did not only provide students and teachers with a way to make Homecoming Week even more enjoyable and high-energy, but it also enabled Prairie Ridge to help those in El Salvador.
As the year progresses, SNHS plans on raising even more money towards the benefit of the communities of El Salvador, helping to make Kelly Harvey’s goal a reality.
