This 2014 Epic Race team eagerly reads the next clue.

The 5th annual Epic Race will happen on November 19 with stronger competition and even crazier challenges than ever before. Organized by Spanish National Honor Society, the proceeds will be donated to the Polk family, who lost their home to fire.

This yearly phenomenon has lead towards the involvement of several participants. But one man in particular devotes a lot of his time and effort into making the event happen.

Mr. Tim Taege, a Spanish teacher at Prairie Ridge, described what students can expect at this event. “Combine the Amazing Race and trivia, Minute to Win it, even Fear Factor and put that all into a scavenger hunt across the school campus.”

He then continues describing the event’s purpose, saying, “It requires teamwork. You’ll run around the school, and the fun thing about it is not really knowing what you’re getting into until you get your clue card, and then it becomes a scavenger hunt that’s kind of intense.”

Students swarm this event to compete against one another and consume everything the Epic Race has to offer.

When asked what her favorite part of the race was, Taylor Kuhn, a senior at PR who has participated in the race twice before, claimed, “All the challenges and competing with everyone and I really liked the school spirit.”

One of the challenges that she said were present in previous years was to “pop a balloon and there was a number inside and there were 3 salsas and whatever number you got, you tried that salsa, and they were all a different amount of heat.”

But unlike Taylor and many other students, some have never participated in these games.

Katie Jones, a senior at PR, said that she heard the race “was fun” and that “it’s competitive and it just seems like a good time.”

Last year’s winners were Andie Shine, Ashton Trout, Allie Pottala, and Ewa Robak, who won for the past two years. So we can expect new winners this year!

There’s still time to register. The race is $20 for a 3-4 person team, and the money is due when you sign up. Registration is in the faculty office and is available until 3 days before the race. But this event fills up quick, so you’ll have to hurry! And then all that is left is to start preparing for the challenge.
