Senior Max Ayers spends time with his cell phone during his free period in the library on Wednesday, April 30.

It’s that time of year again, the time of year when senior students begin to slack off on their schoolwork and focus on other things out of school, which means that senioritis has arrived. Seniors at our school have already developed this attitude earlier in the year, but by now senioritis is in full effect for most students.

According to Merriam-Webster, senioritis is defined as “an ebbing of motivation and effort by school seniors as evidenced by tardiness, absences, and lower grades.” Procrastination is also a common occurrence once senioritis has begun and the lack of motivation is everywhere.

It is hard to keep up with your homework every day now that the weather is nicer and the end of the school year is closing in, there are distractions everywhere that are slowing down productive students.

Senior Max Ayers said that he “is losing some of his motivation to get work done on time,” and he is not alone.

Some students believe that teachers should be more lenient towards the end of the year with being tardy to class and trying to turn in late work. Vinny Clesceri believes “the teachers should understand that students are trying to enjoy the end of the year and we are busy with college work, so turning in each assignment is a hassle.”

Unfortunately, it is not the teacher’s responsibility to encourage the students to do everything because the students need to put in the effort to finish and hopefully the teachers put in effort to make things interesting here at the end of the year.

Don’t worry too much if you have senioritis already because there are things you can do to get back on the right track and finish school strong.
Here is a list of things you can do to help get back on track and finish this year on a stellar note:

1. Motivation is key to find something, anything you enjoy and set goals for yourself so you have some motivation to do your work.
2. Organize your projects and keep a schedule of big papers due.
3. Stop procrastinating and try working on your next big project a little bit every time.
4. Find a friend that you can study with and focus on work when you have free periods at school.
5. Make school fun. Have fun in the last few weeks at school, participate in some of the events at the end of the year and go out and enjoy the spring.

In the end we as students are responsible for our own grades and goals. This is a time in our lives that we need to learn to focus on the tasks at hand and finish what we started to enable us to be successful for whatever comes next in our journey after high school.
