New research from the University of Missouri-Columbia has proven that puppies provide health benefits by just a wag of a tail.

Licking, scratching, and tail wagging. Barking, playing, and couch laying. All those small little things dogs do to show their endless love for a person.

Numerous studies have shown that dogs can lower blood pressure, ease the elderly suffering from loneliness, and help children overcome allergies. Dr. Rebecca Johnson of University of Missouri, Center for Animal Wellness and College of Veterinary Medicine has conducted research suggesting that “hormonal changes occur when humans and dogs interact could help people cope with depression and certain stress-related disorders.” Early results show that a few minutes of stroking a dog prompts a release of “feel good” hormones in humans, including serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin. In addition, petting our pooches decreased levels of the main stress hormone cortisol which is responsible for regulating appetite and cravings.

The study was conducted with 50 dog and 50 non-dog owners over the age of 18. Researchers checked blood samples of both the people and dogs at the beginning of each session and monitored their blood pressure every five minutes. The researchers found that the dog’s blood pressure dropped as soon as they were petted and the people’s dropped about 10 percent 15 to 30 minutes into the study. Dr Alan Beck, director of the Center for the Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University says, “something that is hard-wired into humans so that the presence of animals can help us stay well and even recover from illnesses.”

Dogs are more than a man’s best friend; they provide health benefits for free just by loving them and in turn a person’s love also makes them a healthier pooch. A dog’s love is unconditional which can save a life with a single wag of a tail.
