Four: A Divergent Collection

a review with slight spoilers to the Divergent series

Four: A Divergent Collection

Have you ever read a book and wished you could hear from the other main character’s perspective? Well, Veronica Roth has made it possible with her ‘prequel’ to the Divergent series. Four: A Divergent Collection tells four stories all from Four’s perspective.

This novel will move you through Four’s past before Tris and his present time with Tris. His shows his struggle inside and how hard he fought to do the right thing.

The first mini story in the book was “The Transfer.” It showed Four’s struggle within his original faction, Abnegation. This mini story took place before the Choosing Ceremony. It helped us, the readers, to know of Four’s thoughts at his original home.

The second mini story was “The Initiate.” That story gave us insight into Four’s time as an initiate and his difficulties. It provided real examples of why Eric is hated by Four. Eric “bullied” Four through rude glances, harsh comments and discovering Four’s background. Eric holds this information above Four’s head.

“The Son,” was the third story in the novel. It helped to give us an idea on Four’s life as a Dauntless member before he met Tris. We got to see all the Dauntless experiences that Four lived through.

The last story, “The Traitor,” shows of his time with Tris. This story picks up from the middle of Divergent. This part of the book was my favorite because you got to see how Four was struggling with some hidden knowledge about the factions as he was trying to show Tris his feelings.

All of the stories in Four: A Divergent Collection, helped the readers of Divergent to understand Four a little more. We got to see lots of his reasoning for things and figure out why he did some of the things he did.

Don’t read this book if you haven’t read the Divergent series. There are lots of details that wouldn’t make sense to you. It would also ruin the ending. Reading this collection made me enjoy the series so much more because I saw it in a new light.

Overall, you should go read this book. Lots of your questions about Four are answered. It will make you smile and tear up. Definitely a great read for all the dystopian fans out there.
