Nintendo’s Biggest Release of 2014

Hype over new Pokèmon game is bigger than ever

If video games are altered slightly just to make them look better, does that make it a new game worthy of a full price tag? Because that’s what Nintendo seems to be doing with the upcoming release of Pokèmon: Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire.

Announced earlier this year, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are upcoming remakes of the 2003 releases Pokèmon Ruby/Sapphire. “Pokémon fans first enjoyed Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version when it launched in 2003 for the Game Boy Advance” says Nintendo. “Now, a whole new generation of Pokémon fans will experience the dramatic storyline that unfolds in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.”

Aside from featuring a new graphics engine, these games are exact copies of their nearly 12 year old counterparts: same story, same world, and the same pokemon. This may be exciting for newer fans who haven’t experienced the original games, and they seem to be Nintendo’s target audience with this release.

Rather than reject a recycled game at a $40 price, longtime Pokèmon fans are embracing the upcoming remake with open arms as well. “It’s not the same game,” says Hannah Yantis, PR senior and one such fan of the original games.

“They’re sprinkling just enough new things in to make me fork over my money,” elaborates senior Joel Puca. “Nintendo tells me it’s time for another $40, and I’m like ‘okay Nintendo.’ That’s just the way it is” he explains.

One thing for sure is that Nintendo has built an extremely loyal fanbase with the Pokèmon series, enough to keep veterans and newcomers alike in anticipation for new releases, regardless of how much or how little they change the game. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be released on November 21, 2014, exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS.
