People respectfully call you ‘The computer lab lady,’ but what’s your actual job title?
Computer Lab Aide/AV support
So, you raise money for cancer research?
Yes, I do. It’s called Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society sponsors it.
How long have you been doing this?
This is our 9th year. But it has been taking place in Crystal Lake for last 20 years.
Do you do this alone or do you get helped by others?
My friends, my daughters, and their friends help out with this.
How do you do the charity work?
Well, we usually have a team of twelve people, but this year there is no maximum. Your team walks for 12 hours, with at least one person on the track at all times.
What do you do to raise money?
We have a garage sale. This year it is on Saturday, April 30. The majority of the funds come from it. The garage sale has to be very organized. My family and friends help me out with this also.
Why did you start doing this?
My husband died of cancer. Also, a lot of family and friends I know have been touched by cancer. And I wanted to do something meaningful. My friends asked if I wanted to join their team for Relay for Life.
How much money normally gets raised?
Usually $100 per person is required. So, it’s $1200 for a team. Our garage sale raises more than that most of the time.
Tell us more about the Relay for Life event.
You spend some quality time with your friends at your team’s campsite. There’s music, pizza, coffee, and donuts throughout the night. There are also theme-laps, like “crazy hat” laps, where you can dress up and have fun. It’s a really good experience!
Do you get any help from PR?
Teachers who are my friends do help out with the garage sale by sending their unwanted stuff. And this year Mrs. Stantesly is also joining our team!
How long do you want to keep doing this wonderful and kind event?
I don’t know. At least one more year to make it ten total.
Do you want to tell anything else to PR students and teachers?
Well, if you want to help out, please do stop by the computer lab or check this website.
