If you like to read, then book club is for you. Winter is on its way and what’s better than curling up next to a fire with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book? Headed by Mrs. Bland, book club happens around once a month. The book read is chosen by the group where anyone can throw in ideas, though the most common genre so far this year has turned out to be fantasy.
At our first meeting we talked about books we had read over the summer and what we thought of them. One of the most common books read was the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. It was a particular favorite of Amanda Nelson who said, “I never thought I’d cry and laugh at the same time about a book, but it’s finally happened; definitely one of my favorite series!”
Our second meeting was regarding The Maze Runner, a book by James Dashner. It was tricky to have any predictions about this book because Dashner had already added to the series with a second and third book! Larry Gillett was the only student who had read The Death Cure, the last book. It was nearly impossible for him to keep from spoiling any questions that weren’t answered in the first book, but he managed not to ruin the surprise for anyone.
For our most recent meeting, we read The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. The book was surprisingly pleasant! Not many in the group had read beyond the first book, but many enjoyed it. With the author’s unique usage of language, the book was similar to The Maze Runner.
Basically, the students in book club get together to discuss the book they just read and have fun doing it. Everyone’s opinion is accepted and everyone gets a chance to talk. Senior Quincy Sadowski says “I love book club! It’s fun to talk about great books with friends and others that you might not get to see throughout the day. I always leave with a new book in my hands that I never thought I’d read but always end up enjoying.”
If you’re free after school on Thursday once a month, then head on down to the library for book club. Everyone is welcome. Our upcoming meeting is December 15 to talk about The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor.
